2018 sind wir mit der utopischen Idee angetreten Kunst, Kultur und soziales Miteinander langfristig im Grätzel zu verankern. Unser Name greift dabei die Forderung „Stadt für Alle“ auf, und seit dem bespielen wir das Althangrund-Areal. Durch die kontinuierliche Arbeit der letzten Jahre sind wir eine feste Konstante im Bezirk und in der Nachbar_innenschaft geworden. Wir haben im vergangenen Jahr den Begriff „Kulturzentrum“ aufgegriffen und aus einem kleinen Raum ist inzwischen ein großes Zentrum entstanden. Wir haben neue Räume geschaffen und alte erhalten. Im Kulturzentrum 4lthangrund findet ein umfangreiches Kulturprogramm statt, wir stehen im Austausch mit unseren Nachbar*innen und der Alltag in unseren Räumen ist von einem kreativen Miteinander geprägt aus dem spannendes Neues entsteht. Als Kollektiv schaffen und erhalten wir in und aus dieser Vielfalt die Basis dafür. Mit unseren drei Spielorten – der Alten Mensa, der Wolke und der Hütte – ist uns eine vielseitige Programmgestaltung möglich. Das Programm gliedert sich dabei in drei Sparten „Kultur & Nachbarschaft“, „Musik“ und „Diskurs“. Als Kulturzentrum bieten wir zudem zahlreichen beteiligten Gruppen eine konkrete Perspektive solidarischer Raumnutzung: Büroräume, gemeinschaftliche Flächen für Treffen und Veranstaltungen.

Seit 2018 arbeiten wir so mit klarer Linie. Wir sind ein als gemeinnütziger Verein organisiertes Kollektiv, mit dem Ziel, kulturelle, soziale, nachbarschaftliche und solidarische Aktivitäten im Bezirk zu ermöglichen und Selbstorganisation zu fördern. Um unsere Veranstaltungen möglichst vielen Menschen zugänglich zu machen, sind alle Veranstaltungen kostenfrei. Oftmals stellen wir dabei gesellschaftlich marginalisierte Positionen in den Fokus und tragen damit zu einer Stadtgesellschaft bei in der wir nicht nur „Althangrund für Alle“ sagen, sondern „Wien für Alle“. Das Kulturzentrum 4lthangrund ist der Ort, an dem eine solche solidarische Perspektive auf Stadt ausprobiert und bereits gelebt wird. Dies geschieht in spielerischer Form, manchmal sehr ernst und immer wieder eine sehr anstrengende und fordernde Aktivität. Doch gemeinsam machen wir möglich, dass „Althangrund für Alle“ passiert.

Die Alte Mensa Das letzte Jahr hat alles verändert: nach einer langen Phase der Unsicherheit bezüglich unserer Raumsituation haben wir jetzt endlich den Platz den wir brauchen. Seit Juni 2022 ist die ehemalige Mensa der Alten Wirtschaftsuniversität mit Teil unserer Räume. Auf über 1500 m² setzen wir seitdem Projekte und Veranstaltungen um. Durch den Zuwachs an Raum ist unser Kulturzentrum massiv gewachsen. Unzählige künstlerische Gruppen, Kollektive und politische Initiativen treffen sich bei uns und nutzen die Infrastruktur vor Ort. Die damit verbundene Infrastrukturarbeit und Koordinationsarbeit wurde damit im letzten Jahr zu einer unserer Haupttätigkeiten. Durch den Raum und die damit verbundene Organisierung wird es vielen Initiativen ermöglicht Ideen zu entwickeln und umzusetzen. Die Alte Mensa begreifen wir dabei als einen Sammelpunkt für verschiedene Perspektiven und Aktivitäten. Die Alte Mensa dient dabei als Magnet für den umfangreichen Raumbedarf in Wien. Bei uns kommen verschiedenste aktivistische, künstlerische und queere Gruppen zusammen. Das hat die Dynamik mit der wir Veranstaltungen umsetzen stark verändert. Einmal mehr ermöglicht es uns der Ort und die Konstellation nahe am Puls der Stadt zu sein und im Kontext aktueller Entwicklungen zu agieren.

So entstand über das Jahr 2022 ein besonderer Ort in der Alten Mensa: Menschen aus unterschiedlichsten Gruppen und Kontexten treffen sich, unzählige Perspektiven laufen sich in unseren Räumen über den Weg. Es finden kulturpolitische Aushandlungen und politische Diskussionen statt, der Raum wird sich auf verschiedensten Arten lustvoll angeeignet. Diese Prozesse wären ohne Raum nicht möglich. In der Alten Mensa passiert es.

Die Wolke
Seit 2018 nutzen wir Räume im 4.OG der alten WU, die wir Wolke nennen. Hier hat sich 4lthangrund gegründet und die Strukturen sind von diesen 180m2 Räumen aus gewachsen. Die Wolke hat sowohl Vor- und Nachteile, die sich mit der Nutzung der Alten Mensa nun gezielt ausgleichen lassen. Durch die Lage im großen – doch etwas unübersichtlichen – ehemaligen Universitätsgebäude war die gewünschte niederschwellige Zugänglichkeit nicht immer gewährt. Hier bietet das Kulturzentrum Alte Mensa nun einen direkten Zugang vom Außenareal. Der Nachteil des Raumes Wolke ist nun jedoch durch die Mensa ein Vorteil geworden. Die Abgeschiedenheit des Raumes eignet sich hervorragend für Veranstaltungen, die einen geschützten Rahmen brauchen, etwa für sensible Treffen & Workshop. So nutzt Beispielsweise eine Trans Gruppe den Raum für Ballroom Tanz und Community Treffen. Außerdem sind die Räume perfekt für Büronutzungen geeignet und mehrere Gruppen finden hier ihren Büroplatz.

Die Hütte
Unsere Hütte vor dem Haupteingang zur Alten WU ist die Drehscheibe für all unsere Veranstaltungen im Außenbereich. So dient sie etwa bei Kinoveranstaltung als Popcorn- und Getränkebar, bei anderen als Outdoor Infoladen oder auch mal als Djing Station. Die Hütte wird sowohl von 4lthangrund, den hier nutzenden Gruppen als auch externen Freund*innen, Vereinen und Kollektiven genutzt. Die Veranstaltungen draußen richten sich gezielt an die Nachbarschaft und heißt alle vorbeikommenden Menschen willkommen. Die Hütte bietet die Möglichkeit die Veranstalter*innen kennenzulernen und auch mehr über den Ort und Mitmachmöglichkeiten zu erfahren – ob von 4lthangrund oder von anderen Gruppen. Ein bis zweimal im Jahr wird die Hütte von Künstler*innen neu gestaltet und bietet so eine künstlerische Intervention und Blickfang direkt in der Nachbarschaft, selbst wenn gerade keine Veranstaltung stattfindet.

Programm im Kulturzentrum 4lthangrund Das Programm bei uns ist barrierefrei zugänglich und kostenfrei. Es gibt vereinzelt Veranstaltungen bei denen um eine Spende als Eintritt gebeten wird, aber auch dann ist es immer möglich auch ohne Geld an den Veranstaltungen teilzunehmen. Das Programm wird künstlerisch zu mehr als 70% von Frauen, Queeren, Trans, Inter* und nicht-binären Personen umgesetzt. Dabei achten wir, dass bei uns vor allem jene Perspektiven Platz finden, die sich in gesellschaftlichen Nischendiskursen bewegen: queerfeministische Tanzkollektive veranstalten bei uns ebenso Community Events wie gewerkschaftlich organisierte Fahrradbot*innen.

Für solche Veranstaltungen gäbe es kaum Raum in Wien, wenn wir und einige wenige andere Orte diesen nicht zur Verfügung stellen könnten. Die meisten dieser Veranstaltungen wären auch ohne Förderungen nicht oder kaum möglich.

Unser Programm glieder sich in drei Sparten:

Nachbarschaftsbezogenes & Kultur

Gemeinschaftsgarten, Foodcoop, Nachbarschaftscafé, Workshops, Frühlings- und Herbstfest sowie verschiedene Formate, die in direkter Interaktion mit Nachbarschaft und Grätzel stehen, sind fester Bestandteile des Programms im Kulturzentrum 4lthangrund. Dabei geht es um ein niederschwelliges und offenes Programm, das Beteiligung ermöglicht und über Formate wie „Open slot“ das Einbringen eigener Ideen zulässt. Das Nachbarschaftsprogramm verankert das Kulturzentrum im Bezirk und öffnet es für alle, die in der Umgebung wohnen.

Musik

Die Soli-Veranstaltungsreihe „Grund für“ bietet mit „Grund für: WKR – Wiener Kultur Rave“ Platz für Clubkultur. Die Veranstaltungsreihe die 2018 und 2019 auf mehr als 7 Bühnen Raum für Musik und Austausch geboten hat, musste pandemiebedingt pausieren und soll 2023 fortgesetzt werden. In den Bereich Musik fallen auch Workshops, die sich mit dem Vermitteln von (Ton-)Technik & Djing Skills auseinandersetzen. Zudem soll es in der Alten Mensa sowie an anderen Orten weitere 4lthangrund Formate geben, die Djing und Konzerte ermöglichen.

Diskurs

Wir reagieren auf aktuelle gesellschafts- und kulturpolitische Entwicklungen und setzen dazu passendes Rahmenprogramm um. Dazu gehören verschiedene Diskussionsveranstaltungen rund um emanzipatorische Sicherheit, Klimawandel, Flucht, Grenzen und Menschenrechte. 2023 soll dabei unter anderen das Festival „Voices of uprising“ umgesetzt werden, das aufgrund von Covid abgesagt werden musste. In der Veranstaltung werden gesellschaftspolitische Themen aus mehreren Regionen in denen es sozialen Wandel und/ oder Aufstände gibt und gab anhand von Diskurs, Performance und Filmprogramm aufgegriffen.

About us

In 2018 we started with the utopian idea of anchoring art, culture, and social togetherness in the neighborhood for the long term. Our name takes up the demand “Right to the City”, and since then we have been operating in the Althangrund area. Through the continuous work of the last few years, we have become a constant in the district and in the neighborhood. Last year we took up the term “cultural center” and a small space has now become a large center. We have created new spaces and maintained old ones. At the 4lthangrund cultural center, we have an impressive cultural program, we exchange ideas with our neighbors, and everyday life in our spaces is characterized by a creative togetherness from which exciting new things emerge. As a collective, we create and maintain the basis for this in and from this diversity. With our three venues – the Alte Mensa, the Wolke, and the Hütte – we are able to offer a varied program. The program is divided into three sections: “Culture & Neighborhood”, “Music” and “Discourse”. As a cultural center, we also offer numerous participating groups a concrete perspective of solidarity-based use of space: office space, and communal areas for meetings and events.

Since 2018, we have been working in this way with a firm focus. We are a collective organized as a non-profit association with the aim of enabling cultural, social, neighborhood, and solidarity activities in the district and promoting self-organization. To make our events accessible to as many people as possible, all events are free of charge. We often focus on socially marginalized positions and thus contribute to an urban society in which we don’t just say “Althangrund for everyone”, but “Vienna for everyone”. The cultural center 4lthangrund is the place where such a solidarity perspective on the city is tried out and already lived. This happens in a playful way, sometimes very seriously, and sometimes a very exhausting and demanding activity. But together we make it possible for “Althangrund for All” to happen.

“Alte Mensa” The last year has changed everything: after a long period of uncertainty regarding our space situation, we finally have the space we need. Since June 2022, the former cafeteria of the Old University of Economics has become part of our space. Since then, we have been implementing projects and events on more than 1500 m². Due to the increase in space, our cultural center has grown massively. Countless artistic groups, collectives, and political initiatives meet with us and use the infrastructure on-site. The related infrastructure work and coordination work thus became one of our main activities last year. The space and the associated organization make it possible for many initiatives to develop and implement ideas. We see the Alte Mensa as a meeting point for different perspectives and activities. The Alte Mensa serves as a magnet for the extensive demand for space in Vienna. A wide variety of activist, artistic and queer groups come together here. This has greatly changed the dynamic with which we realize events. Once again, the location and the constellation allow us to be close to the pulse of the city and to act in the context of current developments.

Over the course of 2022, a special place has emerged in the Alte Mensa: people from the most diverse groups and contexts meet, and countless perspectives cross paths in our spaces. Cultural-political negotiations and political discussions take place, and the space is appropriated with relish in the most diverse ways. These processes would not be possible without space. It happens in the Alte Mensa.

“Wolke”
Since 2018 we have been using rooms on the 4th floor of the old WU, which we call the Cloud. This is where 4lthangrund was founded and the structures have grown from these 180m2 rooms. The Wolke has both advantages and disadvantages, which can now be specifically balanced out with the use of the Alte Mensa. Due to its location in the large – yet somewhat confusing – former university building, the desired accessibility on a easy basis was not always granted. The Alte Mensa cultural center now offers direct access from the outside area. However, the disadvantage of the Wolke room has now become an advantage thanks to the Mensa. The seclusion of the room is ideal for events that need a protected setting, such as sensitive meetings & workshops. For example, a trans group uses the space for ballroom dance and community meetings. The space is also perfect for office use and several groups find office space here.

“Hütte”
Our hut in front of the main entrance to the Old WU is the hub for all our outdoor events. For example, it serves as a popcorn and drinks bar at cinema events, as an outdoor information shop at other events or sometimes as a djing station. The hut is used by 4lthangrund, the groups that use it as well as external friends, associations and collectives. The events outside are aimed specifically at the neighborhood and welcome all people passing by. The hut offers the opportunity to get to know the organizers and also to learn more about the place and opportunities to participate – whether from 4lthangrund or from other groups. Once or twice a year, the hut is redesigned by artists and thus offers an artistic intervention and eye-catcher directly in the neighborhood, even if no event is currently taking place.

Program at the 4lthangrund Cultural Center Our program is barrier-free and free of charge. Occasionally we ask for a donation as admission, but even then it is always possible to take part in the events without paying. More than 70% of the program is artistically realized by women, queer, trans, inter* and non-binary people. We make sure that there is room for those perspectives that move in social niche discourses: queer-feminist dance collectives organize community events as well as union-organized bicycle messengers.

There would hardly be space for such events in Vienna if we and a few other places could not provide it. Most of these events would not be possible or hardly possible without funding.

Our program is divided into three sections:

Neighborhood-related & Culture.

Community gardens, food coop, neighborhood café, workshops, spring and autumn festivals as well as various formats that interact directly with the neighborhood and the area around are an integral part of the program at the 4lthangrund cultural center. The aim is to create an easily accessible and open program that enables participation and allows people to contribute their own ideas through formats such as “open slot”. The neighborhood program anchors the cultural center in the district and opens it up to everyone who lives in the neighborhood.

Music

The solo event series “Grund für” (Reason for) offers “Grund für: WKR – Wiener Kultur Rave” provides space for club culture. The event series, which offered space for music and exchange on more than 7 stages in 2018 and 2019, had to pause due to the pandemic and will be continued in 2023. The music area also includes workshops that deal with the teaching of (sound) technology and djing skills. In addition, there will be further 4lthangrund formats in the Alte Mensa as well as at other locations, which will enable djing and concerts.

Discourse

We react to current sociopolitical and cultural-political developments and implement appropriate framework programs. This includes various discussion events around emancipatory security, climate change, flight, borders, and human rights. In 2023, the festival “Voices of uprising”, which had to be canceled due to Covid, will be implemented. The event will address sociopolitical issues from several regions where social change and/or uprisings are taking place and have taken place through discourse, performance, and film programs.
